Performing Arts (Terms 3 and 4)
In Performing Arts students learn about other cultures, celebrations, emotions and the environment, integrating all other curriculum areas. Students develop confidence, creativity, appreciation and tolerance. All students from Foundation to Year 6 attend weekly one hour specialist lessons in Performing Arts, engaging in drama, dance and music activities.
Musical elements such as pitch, dynamics, tempo, texture and structure are taught formally as part of a sequential program from Foundation to Year 6.
Students are taught music theory, learning to read basic music notation and the rhythm patterns they represent. Rhythm and movement games, singing, playing and creating music using non-tuned percussion instruments are an integral part of the music sessions.
Some types of dance experiences included in our performing art sessions include developing a dance/movement vocabulary, learning how dance links to the elements of music, creating, and expressing emotions through dance, building cognitive development by performing dances and learning about traditional or cultural dances.
Students have the opportunity to engage in drumming workshops and learn to play the descant recorder. Students perform at school assemblies and for the wider community throughout the year. Junior students perform at the bi-annual Fairytale Ball and Year 5/6 students present an annual Musical Production. All students participate in the end of year concert.
